Shireka McCarthy was first elected on September 12, 2016, as Councilmember-At-Large, becoming the youngest person elected to serve the City of Seat Pleasant. Ms. McCarthy was re-elected on September 14, 2020, and September 9, 2024.
Ms. McCarthy is a proud native of Prince George’s County Maryland and a graduate of the public-school system. Ms. McCarthy attended Coppin State University where she received her Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) in 2012 and Howard University where she received her Master of Social Work (MSW) in 2015. Ms. McCarthy is a licensed graduate social worker (LGSW) in the District of Columbia and Maryland. Ms. McCarthy is proud to be a first-generation college graduate. Ms. McCarthy’s journey and education have taught her integrity and the importance of human relationships. The principles of the social work profession are precisely the foundation of her compassion, drive, and emphasis on change.
As a Councilmember, Ms. McCarthy has been an advocate for her residents and has promoted overall positive well-being. She has hosted an Annual Vision Board Party which provides guided goal setting, Annual Light Up Your Holiday Christmas light contest, a financial literacy workshop, a mental health series to help acclimate people to the new normal post COVID, seniors and technology workshops, and developed the first social work intern program for the City of Seat Pleasant. Ms. McCarthy loves her community and strives to be an innovative leader.
Councilmember McCarthy is the current Council Vice President and will be the chair of Governmental Affairs and Technology and a committee member of Finance and Budget, and Human Services, Health, and Education committees.
