Aretha A. Stephenson, Ward II

Councilmember Aretha Stephenson, Ward II is a leader, activist, wife, mom, grandmother, homemaker and friend of all. She is also attending American Intercontinental University (AIU) Online full-time, pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare Management. First and foremost she is a child of God, who is the center of her life. Born in Washington, DC her family moved to Prince George’s County when she was at the young age of nine and she has continued to plant her roots in Maryland’s foundation. Mrs. Stephenson graduated from DuVal Senior High. Upon graduating, she attended Temple School of Maryland located in Silver Spring where she received her license as a Registered Medical Secretary and Medical Assistant. Since God blessed her with the gift of a very melodic voice, she has spent several years singing with Gospel choirs and independently singing at weddings, and funerals.

Married to her best friend for almost 24 years, Michael Stephenson, they have both found enjoyment in serving their community side-by-side and meeting new people. Many children have come to know “Nanny’s house” as a hang out spot after camp; a place to just sit and talk, grab a snack or if they prefer share their talents for singing and dancing.

Before taking her seat as the newly elected Councilmember for Ward II on January 25, 2010, Mrs. Stephenson was a caregiver for several elderly couples in the Seat Pleasant community. She found great pleasure in helping them in their homes with patient care, dispensing medication, mentoring and providing spiritual comfort to them and their families when needed. Mrs. Stephenson has been known to speak up for seniors’ rights when they were unable to defend themselves.

In addition, Mrs. Stephenson was employed for several years at the Georgetown University Hospital. She was promoted on numerous occasions within the organization as a Customer Service Representative, Patient Financial Accounts Representative and Patient Financial Associate. During her tenure, she was featured in the prestigious Georgetown Gallery of Excellence where her portrait was displayed, for quite some time, in the Hospital Main Lobby for her outstanding contribution in Customer Service. Additionally, she has always felt that her God-given gift and talent is to give her time, energy, and expertise in healthcare and customer service back to her community.

She has served, during her two years as the Council Member for Ward II, chairing on the Committees of Human Services, Health & Education and The Finance & Budget Committee. She currently chairs the Public Works & Transportation and is a member of the Human Services, Health & Education and the Governmental Affairs & Technology committees. Her commitment is to continually strive toward the pursuit of our constituents’ vision to make our homes here in Seat Pleasant, A City of Excellence, a place where residents and visitors can feel safe. In addition, she continues to make a difference within her community by making changes for the betterment of others. She has implemented the Walk to Excellence Program two years ago and the program is still in effect.
